More from the producer:

The story of this wine

The Den wines are social wines to be enjoyed with friends and family. These wines are named after the den, the heart of all African wild dog communities. Flavour-packed, soft and juicy comfort wines for every day drinking.

Jenny Metelerkamp produced a fine Painted Wolf ink drawing for the label.

The vineyard

Chenin blanc is harvested from a number of blocks on farms in the Swartland region, both irrigated and dry farmed vines of various ages between 10 and 30 years old.

2017 was the third dry vintage on the trot. It was, however, quite cool coming into the harvest period. We adapted the vintage by making two separate batches of wine, the first from early picked fruit, and the second a riper portion fermented with French oak staves. We opted for simple cold fermentation with a few months of lees contact. The wine is made up from a number of different vineyards harvested from a range of sites and soil types.  The oak component wakes up around 50% of the total blend. The two components had different flavours and textures from which we have endeavoured to produce a well- balanced, interesting wine which is a joy to drink.

Ageing potential

This wine should be drunk within two to three years of vintage.

More about the producer:

Top Dogs – Jeremy and Emma Borg established painted Wolf Wines in 2007. Jeremy worked in the San Francisco area for many years, first as a cook and restaurant owner. After selling his restaurant he followed his life passion- wine, working in retail, for a broker and eventually in the cellar at Rosenblum cellars. Here he learned a great deal making hand crafted wine, studying viticulture in California. Returning back to Africa, he began working for a safari camp in Botswana for a number of years – where he met Emma, rekindling his love for African wilderness once again. After Botswana in 1996, Emma and Jeremy made a pact; to find a way to harness their skill to make a meaningful contribution to the conservation of Africa’s wild spaces. Continuing his wine career, Jeremy worked seven years at Fairview where he was responsible for the development of Goats do roam, then went on from there to help a many other wineries with strategic and marketing issues. Eventually, Jeremy began making small amounts of his own wine, searching to fulfill the promise they had made ten years earlier. Eventually the concept took form, and with the help of groups – minded investors, the Painted Wolf wine pack, Painted Wolf Wines began to evolve. The teamwork and social dynamics of an African Painted Wolf pack frame the Painted Wolf business philosophy. The pack is a group of passionate grape growers, artists, conservationists, marketing experts and a leading winery in the Douro.

Run with the pack – Our focused pack brings energy and expertise, and of course, fantastic grapes. Most Painted Wolf wines are crafted from grapes off three of our pack members vineyards- one in Paarl, another in Stellenbosch and the third in the Swartland. Our Swartland vineyard is organically cultivated. With a shared philosophy and passion, the Painted Wolf pack is helping to raise awareness of fundamental conservation concerns, in particular those affecting Southern Africa’s rarest and most endangered carnivore, the African Painted Wolf , also more commonly known at the African Wild dog.
